A balcony garden for a rented flat: no drilling, nothing left behind
Half of Gurugram rents. That is no reason to live with a bare balcony for three years. The trick is to build a garden that packs into the moving van.

Key takeaways
- Everything in a rented balcony should be held by gravity, tension or a clip. Nothing drilled.
- Click-together deck tiles, freestanding planters, hook-in railing planters and battery lighting all pack into four or five cartons.
- Skip ceramic pots, built-in benches, lawn and big trees; none of them survive a move.
- A complete movable balcony is ₹25,000–40,000; the planted version is ₹9,999.
The rented-flat balcony in Gurugram is a particular thing: a drying stand, the inverter, two chairs that came with the flat, and the thought that it is not worth doing anything because you might move next year. But a balcony garden does not have to be fixed to the building. Done right, everything in it lifts, stacks and moves, and the landlord gets the balcony back exactly as it was. It is how we build every balcony, rented or owned, because we do not drill anywhere.
The no-drilling rule
Everything in a rented balcony garden should be held by gravity, tension or a clip. That rules out hooks in the wall, brackets on the railing, built-in benches and plumbed irrigation. It leaves more than you would think.
- Click-together deck tiles. Teak or composite squares that interlock and sit on the existing floor. They lift in ten minutes and the floor underneath is untouched.
- Freestanding planters. Troughs along the wall and railing, on trays, in fibre or polymer so they are light enough to carry down the stairs.
- Railing planters that hook inside. They hang on the inside of the railing without a screw and come off in a second.
- Tension-rod screens. A bamboo or cane screen on a spring-tension rod between the ceiling and the floor gives privacy and shade without a hole.
- Clip-on and battery lighting. Warm string lights on adhesive clips or a tension line, on a battery timer. No wiring, no electrician.
- Drip from a tap or a tank. A battery timer screws onto the balcony tap; if there is no tap, a 20-litre tank with a small pump does the job. Lines run inside the planters.
What to buy, and roughly what it costs
| Item | Rough cost | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 10–12 plants in matching fibre planters with trays | ₹6,000–9,000 | The garden itself; chosen for your balcony's facing |
| Deck tiles for a 5×8 ft balcony | ₹7,000–10,000 | Makes it a room; lifts when you leave |
| Two folding chairs and a low table, or a bench | ₹4,000–9,000 | Folding furniture moves; built-in does not |
| Railing planters, hooked inside | ₹2,500–4,000 | Greenery at eye level, no screws |
| Battery-timer drip or self-watering planters | ₹3,000–6,000 | Survives your travel and the May heat |
| Clip-on warm lights on a timer | ₹1,500–3,000 | The cheapest thing that changes the most |
That is ₹25,000–40,000 for a complete, movable balcony, or ₹9,999 at Good Theory for the planted version without the floor and the furniture. The cost guide has the itemised budgets.
What to skip
- Ceramic and cement pots. Forty kilos wet, they crack in a summer and they do not survive a move.
- Anything screwed to the railing. It leaves holes and arguments about the deposit.
- Lawn. Dies by June, and you cannot take it with you.
- Big trees. A tree that needs two people to lift is a tree you leave behind. Keep the tallest plant at something you can carry.
Moving day
Water the plants the night before, not the morning of, so the planters are lighter. Deck tiles stack flat in a carton; railing planters unhook; the tension rod collapses. Plants travel upright in open cartons, in the car rather than the truck if it is summer. Most balcony gardens pack into four or five boxes and are back together in an afternoon. If you have a Care plan, the crew does the packing and the re-installation at the new flat as one of the visits.
Landlord and society
Tell the landlord what you are doing and that nothing is drilled; most are pleased, because a planted balcony photographs better when the flat is next listed. Tell the society the same: trays under everything, nothing outside the railing, nothing on the facade. Our designer gives you a one-page note that says exactly that.
Renting and not sure it is worth it? The visit is free and the quote is itemised, so you can start with the plants and add the floor when you are sure.
Questions people ask
All of them. Freestanding planters, railing planters and deck tiles are designed to pack. Water lightly the night before, carry the plants upright, and keep them out of a closed truck in summer. Most balconies pack into four or five cartons.
