How to fit a sit-out and a garden on a 6×4 ft balcony
The standard Gurugram balcony is 24 square feet. That is enough for a room, not a shelf, if you measure before you buy.

Key takeaways
- A 6×4 ft balcony holds two seats and twelve plants if the plants come off the floor.
- Keep a 24-inch path from the door; put troughs on the walls and planters inside the railing.
- Three layouts work: the corner sit-out, the bench along the railing, and the garden with a stool.
- Fold everything you can. A fixed table is in the way twenty-two hours a day.
Most 2 and 3 BHK balconies in Gurugram's towers are about six feet by four: a door in the middle of the long wall, a railing opposite, and a drying stand already in the way. People look at it and buy pots. The balconies that end up being used are the ones where someone measured first and decided where the chair goes before deciding where the plants go. Here is how we lay out a 6×4.
Start with the numbers
- Walkway: you need 24 inches clear from the door to somewhere. Everything else is negotiable.
- A chair needs 20×20 inches; two folding chairs side by side, 42 inches.
- A low table is 16–18 inches across. A stool does the same job in 12.
- A planter trough along a wall is 10–12 inches deep. Along the railing, 8 inches hooked inside.
- The drying stand, folded, is 6 inches thick. Open, it is the whole balcony.
Put those on a sketch of your 72×48 inch rectangle and the problem is clear: the sit-out and the garden cannot both be on the floor. One of them goes vertical.
Layout 1: the corner sit-out
Two chairs and a stool in the corner away from the door, a planter trough along the short wall behind them, railing planters along the full length of the railing, and a tall plant in the far corner. The floor stays clear from the door to the chairs. Twelve plants, two seats, and the drying stand folds against the wall beside the door. This is the layout for most east- and north-facing balconies, where the corner is pleasant all day.
Layout 2: the bench along the railing
A 48-inch bench with storage against the railing, facing the room, with a trough of tall plants behind it at railing height for privacy and shade. Planters on the short walls, and a folding table that hangs on the wall. Seats three at a squeeze, hides the cushions, and the plants behind the bench take the afternoon sun instead of you. The layout for west-facing balconies.
Layout 3: the garden with a stool
For people who want the green more than the seat. Troughs along both short walls and the railing, a vertical planter or a plant stand on the wall beside the door, deck tiles across the floor, and one good stool for coffee. Twenty plants, one seat, and the washing machine stays where it is. The kitchen-garden version of this, with troughs of herbs and greens, is in the kitchen garden guide.
Five mistakes that waste a small balcony
- Pots on the floor. Every pot on the floor is a square foot you cannot stand in. Troughs on the wall and railing planters hold more plants on no floor at all.
- A table you cannot fold. A fixed table is in the way whenever you are not using it, which is most of the time.
- Plants that get big. An areca palm bought at three feet is six feet in two years and owns the corner. Choose plants that stay the size you buy them, or that take pruning.
- Furniture that does not match the floor. Deck tiles and a cane chair look like a room; plastic chairs on grey tiles look like a store room with plants.
- The drying stand in the sun. Clothes dry anywhere on a Gurugram balcony. The sunniest spot belongs to the plants.
What it costs
The corner sit-out with twelve plants, railing planters, deck tiles and two folding chairs is a ₹20,000–30,000 balcony; the planted version without flooring and furniture is ₹9,999. The cost guide itemises both.

Questions people ask
Yes. Two folding chairs and a stool in the corner, planters on the walls and railing rather than the floor, and a clear 24-inch path from the door. The trick is keeping the plants off the floor.
